The paper presents a screening of primary char samples produced by hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass. The relevance of the work lies in the use of materials that are practically not used in other areas of production (aquatic vegetation, organic waste, algae, bark and wood waste, food waste, waste from the agro-industrial complex). The study aims to find the most suitable raw material for the production of charcoal sorbents by hydrothermal liquefaction. To evaluate the charcoals, their elemental composition, sorption capacity for methylene blue, iodine, phenol were analyzed. The average yield of charcoal was 35%. The obtained chars sorbed methylene blue best (up to 239 mg/g) and phenol worst (not more than 19 mg/g). The results showed that the obtained chars are promising raw material for the production of sorbents.
